There Goes the Neighborhood

is a rug that I knit out of various fabrics that represent the cultures in my neighborhood.

Added to the top of the rug are strips of fabric that spell "There Goes the Neighborhood" in the represented languages.

My interest in this piece was to challenge the idea of a neighborhood that has been traditionally viewed as "devalued" when other cultures move in. in fact,

I am interested in the idea of turning that concept on it's head by questioning how gentrification strips a neighborhood of it's cultural vibrancy. and thus devaluates it.
